Employed by a government agency known only as Kortech, Jonathan Hart had discovered cybernetic reconstruction -- the process of bonding metal with human flesh. Shortly after his find he gathered his research and prepared to send it to the press to make his discovery known. He had it in his mind that he would change the world for the better. The agency heard about him going public and sent a team in to stop the progress. Jonathan Hart was erased from existence. To complete the total deletion of his past, his family's lives were to be taken as well.

Jonathan's wife, Maria Hart, was at home cleaning the house -- as she did daily -- when she was brutally murdered and covered-up to look like a fire had taken her life. Their daughter, Anna, who was also working for the government (a benefit that resulted from her father's employment) made a visit home only to find the home she resided in for so many years burning to the ground. She tried to rescue her mother and dove into the fire. Upon seeing her mother already dead, a gas line suddenly exploded and sent her body hurtling across the yard.

The team of assassins was near by to watch over the massacre until the the fire department and police arrived -- to ensure there would be no problems. Noticing Anna was still moving, they approached her to finish the job. The team leader stopped them having the idea that Kortech could use her to reproduce the experiment that Hart first attempted. She would act as a guinea pig to test if cybernetic reconstruction was a success. Upon going to the lab and completing the surgery and testing, a bio-chip was installed in her brain to erase her memory and keep her under the agency's control.
Anna Hart (now known as Darkheart) became a lethal weapon ready to kill upon command. The operation was a success except for one thing -- her past wasn't completely erased from her mind. Now plagued with endless memories she doesn't recognize, Darkheart struggles to solve the mystery of the images in her mind while still functioning as a government weapon -- not knowing that the man who controls her is the one who took her past.
